For those who remain unconvinced about the link between nutrition and longevity, here’s some more robust evidence that healthy dietary patterns contribute significantly to disease prevention.
Consider a meta-analysis recently published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics involving 113 reports and more than 3 million individuals. The systematic review determined that a greater adherence to diets considered to be of high-quality nutrition—as assessed by the Healthy Eating Index, Alternate Healthy Eating Index, and Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension scores—is linked with lower cardiovascular disease incidence or mortality, cancer incidence or mortality, type 2 diabetes, and neurodegenerative disease. These whole-food approaches to eating were also associated with lower chances for mortality among cancer survivors. Have we found the mythical longevity pill in nutrition?
